Pain In Your Hands, Wrists, Or Elbows?
Here’s What May Be Causing It
Think about how often you use your hands. You need them to cook and eat meals, brush your hair, get dressed, take care of your pets, send a text message – the list is endless! Now, imagine you’re dealing with pain in your wrist or hands. It’ll have a big impact on your daily life, won’t it?
That’s why pain or injuries in your hands, wrists, and elbows can be incredibly debilitating — we use those three body parts so much throughout our day, often without realizing it. That’s also why it’s so important to resolve the underlying cause of the pain, which is the approach we take at Vibrant Health Solutions.
Our multidisciplinary team doesn’t want to mask your symptoms. We want to eliminate the pain or injury completely. To accomplish that, we take the time to learn about your symptoms and recovery goals, work to pinpoint why you’re hurting, and create an integrated care plan that meets your unique needs.
Today, we want to explore some of the common sources of hand, wrist, or elbow pain and what you can do to address them. If you’d like more personalized guidance, schedule an appointment with us today!
What’s Causing the Pain in My Hands, Wrists, or Elbows?
Repetitive Strain Injuries
Repeated motions, such as typing, texting, or playing musical instruments, can strain the muscles, tendons, or nerves in the small joints of your upper extremities, leading to inflammation and pain.
Sports Injuries
Any sport that involves big swinging or overhead motions – such as tennis, golf, or swimming – puts you at risk for injury in your upper extremities. Two prevalent sports injuries (lateral or medial epicondylitis) both affect the elbow. You probably know them by their common names: tennis elbow or golfer’s elbow.
These injuries generally develop due to overuse or poor posture that strains the tendons that attach to the elbow, causing pain and weakness.
Fractures and Sprains
The previous causes listed here typically develop over time, so the onset of their symptoms happens gradually. However, you can suffer acute injuries to your hand, wrist, or elbow – namely strains (in which the ligament stretches or tears) or fractures (in which a bone breaks).
These injuries generally result from falling on an outstretched hand and typically require immediate medical care. That said, you will need rehabilitation to restore function.
Arthritis
Osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis (the two most common types) often affect joints in the hands and wrists, leading to pain, stiffness, and swelling. In fact, rheumatoid arthritis often begins in small joints like the hands.
While arthritis has no cure, you can slow its progression and manage your symptoms to minimize their impact on your daily life.
Nerve Compression
Nerve compression syndromes occur when nerves in the elbow or wrist become entrapped, resulting in pain, numbness, and tingling in the hand and fingers. If left untreated, you might also experience reduced fine motor skills.
Two common examples of nerve compression are carpal tunnel syndrome (in which the median nerve becomes trapped in the wrist) and cubital tunnel syndrome (in which the ulnar nerve becomes trapped in the elbow)
How Can Vibrant Health Solutions Help?
Our clinic takes an unusual approach to pain management. Because we emphasize treating the whole patient (not just your symptoms), we always begin with a comprehensive assessment to help us understand your symptoms. From there, our team determines a specific diagnosis so we know what condition we’re working with.
Next, we’ll create a tailored, comprehensive care plan that pulls from multiple healthcare fields, including chiropractic care, physical therapy, massage therapy, and more. This allows us to fully address your condition and ensure you get the relief you deserve.
We also opt for all-natural treatments to help you avoid using pain medications or other invasive procedures. A treatment program to address upper extremity pain might include the following techniques:
- Hands-on manual therapy to boost blood circulation and improve mobility
- Customized bracing to protect the affected area as it heals
- Saline-based joint injections to reduce pain
- Laser or ultrasound therapy to manage pain and facilitate healing
- Therapeutic exercises to improve function and fine motor skills

Nerve Glides
Simple Exercises to Ease Nerve Discomfort
If your elbow, wrist, or hand pain stems from a nerve disorder (like carpal tunnel or cubital tunnel syndromes), you might benefit from nerve glide exercises. These simple mobilization techniques stretch the nerves and encourage them to follow the natural movement of your joint.
Your arm contains three major nerves, and the Vibrant Health Solutions physical therapists have a nerve mobilization exercise for each. Try them out at home — but stop if you feel any pain.
And if you want to learn more about nerve gliding exercises, schedule an appointment with us today!
Median Nerve Glide
- Stand up straight and place one arm by your side, the palm facing up. Slowly bend your wrist back so your fingers move toward the floor, and you feel a stretch in the front of your wrist and palm.
- Next, tilt your head away from your arm. Imagine your arm, neck, and head forming a diagonal line.
- Hold for a few seconds before returning to the starting position and repeating on the other side.

Ulnar Nerve Glide
- Stand up straight and hold your arm so that it forms a 90-degree angle with your palm turned away from your body. Turn your head to look at the back of your hand.
- Next, bend your wrist so your fingers point toward your face. Then, slowly move your hand and head so that you can touch your palm to the side of your face.
- Repeat the movement a few times, then move to the other side.

Radial Nerve Glide
- Stand straight with your arm at your side, palm facing to the back. Bend your wrist so your palm faces the ceiling.
- Holding your hand in that position with your arm straight, raise the arm until you feel a pull in your arm. How high you can go will vary from person to person.
- Tilt your head away from your arm, then toward your arm, moving slowly.
- Repeat a few times, then move to the other side.
